Everyone has a story. This is part of my story: I lost a beautiful son to cancer. It was a grueling, brutal 5 year battle as seen through human eyes. But, thank God, because of God, William caught many glimpses of his 17 year story through God’s eyes. Less then a week before he died, he woke up one morning and said, “Mom, you have no idea of all the colors.”
Our view of life and its colors is so limited. We can only see what is natural to us here in our earthly home. But God’s eyes see the supernatural, which for God is the natural-the whole creation in all its glorious colors. Paul knew this, “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.” 1 Corinthians 13:12.
The two rainbow beads on The 29:11 Story bracelet tell a crucial part of God’s Perfect Story. The first is on the downward fall of the Old Testament; it follows the wooden bead of the Ark, the aqua blue bead of the flood, and the green bead of the redeemed Earth. The flood, one of mankind’s most horrendous events, marks the grief of the Holy Spirit hovering over the creation like a dove in despair:
Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever,…The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled…So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” Genesis 6:5-7
God the Father, His Son and the Holy Spirit are the Perfect Family; the first parent and child relationship. They created us in their image and longed for us, their creation, to join them in this perfect family circle. Of course we fell from their grace. Can’t you hear the parents' anguish over a child’s waywardness? “You may not come home, you are dead to us. You have broken our hearts.” But can a parent ever really forget a child? Can that child ever really be far from the parents’ hearts. Do not the parents have eternal hope for a redemption? The flood is a chapter in our story about the ultimate family love and despair.
But God’s love for Noah and His covenant with him as expressed by the rainbow foreshadows humanity’s ultimate rescue and redemption. And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, … I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. … Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Genesis 9:12-15
The corresponding rainbow bead that provides our rescue and redemption is on the other side of God’s Perfect Story. It is at the end of the New Testament in the Book of Revelation. It is the bead that announces the Second Coming.
“At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne.” Revelation 4:2-3
Listen to John’s story of the coming Christ; imagine the colors:
“And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.” Revelation 1:12-16
I’m sure you’ve seen a rainbow. What a beautiful gorgeous thing that is. The spectrum of colors from the bottom of the bow up are the Roy G. Biv of our childhood classroom: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. But have you ever witnessed a double rainbow? That is truly a gift. Did you know that the colors of the spectrum in the second echoing rainbow are reversed? Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Every 29:11 Story, God’s perfect story, is a double rainbow: at the beginning, the Old Testament, God in purple divinity creates the blue Heavens and the green Earth, the white dove of the Holy Spirit- reflecting the light of all that is pure-,the creation of mankind in all our skin tones, and the red apple of sin and Satan. The Cross arrests our fall and the New Testament echos God’s rainbow in reverse order: the Old Red Dragon, Satan and sin, are defeated. All the colors of humanity are invited into the presence of the white Holy Spirit as we wait for our new green Earth and our new blue Heavens and our homecoming to the Father in purple. God’s complete promise to Noah revealed.
The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit - the Perfect Family - adopts us into their perfect family circle. .And in between these two events, these two rainbow beads, are all the colors of God’s supernatural/natural creation: blue heavens, green earths, shades of brown and pink for us, red for sin, orange for fire,…God’s perfect rainbow, The Perfect Story.
My niece, Julia, met her husband in rehab. Julia found God and her new future there and then. Two years after our intervention and her attempted suicide, we met on the plains of Montana to witness the marriage of Julia and Donald. The entire weekend was outside. The night before, we had shared a chilly dinner with all of the couple’s best friends. Most of them were from rehab. They were the funniest, wisest group of hard lives I’d ever been around. The day of the wedding was blustery and rainy. But when the couple shared their first kiss as a couple, the clouds parted and a glorious rainbow appeared as God blessed that broken family.
